Tokenisation in the real economy

Debuting at Deutsche Bank Park, the inaugural conference on cryptocurrency, the metaverse, NFTs and blockchain technology in the “Heart of Europe” brings together different industries to discuss everything from hype to shifting paradigms, with the aim of understanding, debating and critically questioning the relevance of use cases in the real economy.

Networking, exchange and dialogue will be the central themes of the conference, during which national and international experts from various sectors will offer insights and ideas on forward-thinking topics and technologies, such as areas of blockchain application and tokenising assets in the music, art and sport industries through blockchain technology, as well as trading digital assets, necessary infrastructure and framework conditions and the sustainability of the technology and its products.

Sumit Arora is Vice President of Strategy & Analytics for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) as part of MLSE Digital Labs, the organisation’s own technology, digital and innovation group. MLSE owns a number of sports franchises in Toronto, including the Toronto Raptors, the Toronto Maple Leafs and FC Toronto. Sumit is responsible for business analytics and oversees the development of innovation strategies across all organisational units.

Alexander Bechtel is Head of Digital Asset & Currency Strategy in Deutsche Bank’s commercial clients division. He is a graduate of the University of St. Gallen, where he continues to work as an external lecturer, and regularly publishes articles, podcasts and research papers on monetary theory and digital currencies. A former external consultant at the European Central Bank, Alexander also completed a research fellowship at Stanford University.

Dr. Heiko Beck has been CEO of dwpbank since 2016. A qualified solicitor, he began his career in 1995 with Deutsche Börse, where he headed the legal department and was on the management board of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. He later took up management roles at DekaBank, Commerz Real and Union Investment. At dwpbank, he coordinates general management affairs and heads the corporate control and customer management department.

Stefan Bender has been Head of Corporate Bank Germany since October 2019. Prior to that he spent four years as Head of the Commercial Clients Germany division, which merged with other divisions in 2019 to form Corporate Bank Germany. After training as a banker at Frankfurter Hypothekenbank, Stefan studied business administration at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, graduating with a degree in 1997. He has since been working for Deutsche Bank in various capacities, starting out as a graduate trainee in capital market operations with Deutsche Morgan Grenfell (Deutsche Bank AG) in London before taking on foreign exchange business roles in Frankfurt and Singapore. In 2004, he took over as head of foreign exchange options trading in Germany and foreign exchange options business of selected currencies in emerging international markets. Between 2005 and 2010, Stefan was head of Germany’s foreign exchange product area and in April 2010, he was appointed Global Head of Corporate Treasury Sales. He held several other roles in Germany between 2011 and October 2019: Head of Transaction Banking in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) incl. Germany, Co-Head of Corporate Finance and Head of Commercial Clients. In June 2016, he was also appointed to the management board of Deutsche Bank Privat- und Firmenkunden AG, where he was responsible for the business and commercial clients division until the dissolution of the legal entity in 2019.

Konstantin Dagianis is a financial services partner at PwC and heads the company’s crypto assurance division. His role involves focusing on crypto companies as up-and-coming players in the financial market, potential business models and new use cases for financial service providers, regulatory handling of crypto assets (e.g. cryptocurrencies and NFTs) and tokenising traditional assets. He also leads projects related to digitalising business processes of financial service providers, through technologies such as robotic process automation, artificial intelligence, text mining, process mining and data & analytics.

Susanne Fromm is CEO of the Hamburg-based CoinIX GmbH & Co. KGaA, an investment company where investors can participate in the performance of blockchain startups, early stage token projects and liquid cryptocurrencies via a share. Fromm is a digitalization and blockchain expert and regularly teaches courses at universities and companies. 

Previously, she worked at Roland Berger for 6 years and completed an MBA at INSEAD. Subsequently, she was responsible for the design and global roll-out of digitization strategies at Allianz, made corporate venture capital investments and formed partnerships with technology groups.

Katharina Gehra is CEO and co-founder of Immutable Insight and a member of Fürstlich Castell'schen Bank und Börse Stuttgart’s supervisory board. She has previously worked in banking, consultancy firms and private equity and has an MSc in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Axel Hellmann has been a member of the Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball AG executive board since 2012 and has served as its CEO since April 2021. He has held various positions at Eintracht Frankfurt since 2001: From 2001 to 2012 he was a member of the Eintracht Frankfurt e.V. executive committee and its managing director from 2005 to 2012. Hellmann received his legal training in Würzburg, Bristol and Berlin between 1991 and 2000 and has worked as an assessor and lawyer in Frankfurt am Main since 2001. He has been Of Counsel to the international law firm White & Case LLP since 2020 and a member of the DFV Deutsche Familienversicherung AG supervisory board since May 2022.

Kay Hofmann gained his first experience in corporate finance and private equity at KPMG and Apax. In 2003, he co-founded the M&A company First Capital Partners, which focused on retail, consumer goods and real estate. In 2015, this became part of the ACXIT Group, which in turn was sold to the US investment bank Stifel in July this year. He is currently Head of Real Estate DACH and CEO / Board Member of 360X RE AG (Tectrex). The latter was founded in 2018 with other shareholders as RTX21 GmbH and became a joint venture with 360X AG in July 2021 - mainly financed by Deutsche Börse and Commerzbank.

Paul was named among the ten most innovative finance and insurance experts in Germany by leading business magazine Business Punk in 2020 and is currently the regional chairman of blockchain and real estate foundation Fibree. He studied management, specialising in finance, at the University of Warwick in the UK before becoming the assistant to the Global Chief Controlling Officer of a large multinational corporation and co-heading an international incubator. He is also an accredited financial investment broker and has been an art collector for several years, having learned the fundamentals of art investment at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London.

As co-founder and CEO of Timeless Investments, Jan drives the vision of universal access to unique collectibles, including classic cars, sneakers and watches. Through fractional ownership, any increase in value is divided equally. Prior to founding Timeless, Jan was a strategy associate at SAP and in 2011 he became a board member at Fonpit AG, where he played a leading role in building the largest Android community in the world. His enthusiasm for distributed ledger technologies started in 2016, when he spent nights studying and analysing whitepapers with a close friend. Jan realised the potential of these new technologies and decided to further his education at Stanford University, before founding Timeless Investments.

As a former strategy consultant for blue chip companies, Ante has dedicated his career to blockchain technology for the last three years. In 2013, he founded the well-known football fantasy startup Kickbase and the award-winning design and development agency Cobe, based in Munich. In 2020, he and his brother founded the Web3 startup The Football Company, the world's first football metaverse based on avatars and licensed digital collectibles and competitions. The Munich-based startup has just received seed funding of €2.5 million. The investment round was led by Dreamcraft Ventures from Copenhagen, alongside DapperLabs, BLN Capital and various business angels and professional footballers such as Joshua Kimmich and Cesc Fabregas, as well as coaches such as Niko and Robert Kovac as founding investors.

Tobin is the Vice President and Global General Manager of Topps Digital. Mr. Lent is responsible for setting the vision and overseeing all activities related to Topps’ digital business including mobile apps and Blockchain NFTs.  Joining Topps Digital in 2018, Mr. Lent has over 20 years of experience growing start-up mobile entertainment and game companies.

Dr. Dirk Lueth has founded a number of companies, including Financial Times Germany, and has lived in Silicon Valley, USA, since 2009. As an author, speaker and mentor, he deals with start-ups, blockchain technology, cryptocurrency, the metaverse, platform economics and network effects. Dr. Lueth studied business administration and economics in Frankfurt and Paris and gained a PhD on the topic of private and state-controlled currencies from the European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel. He enjoys spending his free time with his family and is a keen swimmer, surfer and footballer.

Heike Mai is a senior economist in the area of banking, financial markets and regulation at Deutsche Bank Research. Her research focuses on payment systems, digital currencies and non-bank finance. Before joining Research, she was a sales manager in Deutsche Bank AG’s global cash management division. She studied economics and Spanish at the University of Cologne.

Fabio De Masi is an economist, a former member of the German Bundestag and European Parliament and sat on the board of inquiry investigating a number of financial scandals – including the Wirecard committee of inquiry. As a columnist, author and consultant, he specialises in the future of financial markets in the digital age.

Tibor Mérey is Managing Director & Partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Vienna. His work focuses on accelerating digitalisation processes and introducing companies to AI. One of BCG’s biggest metaverse experts, Mérey is also an investor and advisor to a number of tech start-ups. He studied business administration in St. Gallen, finance in Barcelona and international management in Sydney.

Johanna Neuschäffer studied art history and economics before co-founding Office Impart, a multidimensional space and platform for contemporary art. Self-styled experts in changing the art world, Johanna and her co-founder develop on- and offline exhibitions featuring both classically produced and digital works. She is also co-founder of the ART-TECH Report research initiative.

Shelly Palmer is the Professor of Advanced Media in Residence at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the CEO of The Palmer Group, a consulting practice that helps Fortune 500 companies with technology, media and marketing. Named LinkedIn’s “Top Voice in Technology,” he covers tech and business for Good Day New York, writes a weekly column for Adweek, and is a regular commentator on CNN and CNBC. He’s the Co-Host of the award-winning podcast Techstream with Shelly Palmer & Seth Everett and he hosts the Shelly Palmer #CryptoWednesday Livestream. Shelly is a prolific author. Along with his daily newsletter, his books include, the Amazon #1 Bestseller, Blockchain – Cryptocurrency, NFTs & Smart Contracts: An executive guide to the world of decentralized finance.

The term “legend” has rarely been more fitting than in Moses Pelham’s case. The only rapper in the world to have spent five decades in the German charts, Pelham created what would later become known as street rap with the Rödelheim Hartreim Projekt, discovered Sabrina Setlur and Xavier Naidoo, founded Glashaus and signed Azad. He has penned 29 LPs, released 94 singles and sold 10 million records through his label 3P alone. As well as 29 gold, silver and bronze awards, Pelham also counts the German Echo Award, the Goethe Plaque, the Golden Camera and HipHop.de’s Lifetime Achievement award among his accolades.

Christian Rau joined Mastercard as Senior Vice President Crypto and Fintech Enablement in Europe in April 2022. Working closely with the European and global product and account teams, he helps customers implement innovations in digital payment technologies. As Head of the Central European Product Team, Christian was behind the launch of Debit Mastercard in Germany and Switzerland between 2015 and 2019. He was General Manager of the Austrian Mastercard office in Vienna from 2019 to 2022 and has been employed by Mastercard since 2012.

Tobias is a crypto specialist with several years of experience in the field. He wrote his thesis with Prof. Philipp Sandner on the tokenisation of business processes – while still studying for his master’s degree. He went on to work as a blockchain consultant, and at Deloitte. These days he specialises in the institutionalisation of crypto assets at Steubing AG. He also founded StakeHaus Labs, a company that sets out to bring digital assets to the masses.

Fabian Schaum is a young entrepreneur and co-founder of 360X. A former crypto product manager at Eurex, where he focused on crypto derivatives and institutional crypto custody, Fabian studied mathematics. He has been professionally involved in crypto and blockchain technologies since 2016, having taken up a personal interest in the subject three years previously. His international activities have already taken him to Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Frankfurt.

After three years in banking regulation and banking supervisory law at PwC, Nils von Schoenaich-Carolath spent the following two and a half years in investment, launching a project which helped put the first digital twin of a fund on the blockchain through tokenisation. In the process, he gained a deep understanding of digital assets and tokenisation, as well as the structuring of complex finances and the real estate industry. In 2021, he founded von Schoenaich-Carolath Consulting and worked on various projects in the field of digital assets and tokenisation. Today, Nils is Managing Director of Digital Assets at Bankhaus Scheich, with whom he reached a framework agreement with the state of Hesse in November 2021. The agreement enables confiscated cryptocurrencies to be exploited in a legally secure, market-friendly and market-compliant manner, thus establishing a new market standard. In 2022, together with Bankhaus Scheich and its FinTech arm Tradias, he became the first person to tokenise a convertible bond in accordance with eWpG, and to tokenise a fund in Germany. Nils has been a blockchain enthusiast since 2016.

Andreas Traum is a partner in PwC’s Financial Services practice and advises clients in the capital markets industry segment. In addition to working with investment banks and market infrastructures, he is responsible for advisory services in the area of digital assets and bundles PwC’s expertise in this new asset class from the advisory, assurance and tax and legal areas. Together, they help new players as well as established financial institutions to navigate the emerging and dynamically developing ecosystem around cryptocurrencies, tokenised assets, NFTs and the metaverse and to find optimal solutions for new use cases.

Henning Vollbehr has been involved in the capital market and its related sectors for over 20 years. Prior to the foundation of SWIAT in February 2022, Henning had been responsible for the development and release upgrades of DekaBank’s FrontOffice systems since 2014. At Landesbank Berlin, he was Head of Department for Structured Product Trading and Commission Business from 2010 to 2014. From 2006 to 2010, Henning was Head of DekaBank’s Department for Equity Derivatives and Structured Equity Products.

In addition to his role as Executive Partner of White & Case’s Frankfurt office, Karsten Wöckener is a partner in the Global Capital Markets practice group. He advises companies on corporate financial matters, focusing on equity and debt capital markets. Karsten also advises companies in relation to the use of new corporate financial technologies, the introduction of digital platforms and the role of DLT when issuing security tokens. He advises various issuers on corporate financial matters.

During his 12-year stint at Deutsche Bank, Hubertus Väth served as Analyst, Head of Communications and Chief Economist for Asia as well as Global Head of Marketing for Wealth Management in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Singapore. He is the founder of NewMark Group and CEO of NewMark Finanzkommunikation GmbH, which was founded in 1997 and specialises in market research, management consultation and financial communications. In 2008, Väth was appointed Managing Director of Frankfurt Main Finance, the financial centre initiative for Frankfurt and the leading financial centre in Germany and the Eurozone. In 2018, he was appointed to the board of directors at World Alliance of International Financial Centers (WAIFC), which was established to facilitate collaboration and the exchange of best practices among international financial centres and to foster greater exchange with international authorities. Väth regularly speaks at international financial conferences on Brexit, FinTechs and the financial centre development, euro clearing and green finance. Väth is a Special Fellow of AFCA’s Financial Think Tank and publishes regularly in this capacity. He is a Rotary Club member and has a degree in economics from the University of Mainz. Väth is also an occasional lecturer at universities and business schools.

Corinna Wohlfeil has successfully established herself in the male-dominated domain of banking and financial reporting, gaining a wealth of knowledge which has allowed her to blossom as an independent business journalist and a presenter with natural charm, ease and expertise. After studying banking, she gained many years of sales experience working with wealthy clients in Deutsche Bank’s investment management division. She fine-tuned her communication skills with an apprenticeship in sales and media training for political and business leaders. She gained her first taste of television by managing – and then presenting – Deutsche Bank’s own Business TV, before becoming a presenter with news channel ntv.
