Mannheim: Catching up with old friends in the DFB Cup
SGE’s DFB Cup campaign gets under way at SV Waldhof Mannheim, opponents with a storied past who have always afforded a warm welcome to Frankfurt, with a close relationship between the two sets of fans dating back over two decades.
Another grand old club in the first round
The Eagles know full well that the newly promoted third-tier outfit could well prove a banana skin, as Waldhof Mannheim will be licking their lips at the prospect of crossing swords with last season’s Europa League semi-finalists. Eintracht are also painfully aware of the fact that a match against a supposedly smaller club from the lower leagues with a rich history to look back on can easily turn pear-shaped: just last year, fourth-division SSV Ulm 1846 came out all guns blazing and sent the cup-holders crashing out in the first round. Needless to say, any repeat of that kind of outcome is to be avoided at all costs…
First competitive fixture in Mannheim since 2002
There have been friendlies aplenty between SV Waldhof and Eintracht, but you have to go back a long way to find the last time that the two teams met at the Carl-Benz-Stadion with something at stake. It is almost 17 years, in fact, since Frankfurt made the short trip to Mannheim for a floodlit Friday night match in the 2. Bundesliga, where they came away with the three points thanks to a solitary David Montero goal in the second half. The away section was full that night, but the attendance was "only" around the 10,000 mark. This Sunday’s match will be a different story, with tickets for this DFB Cup first-round match selling out in the blink of an eye.
Kick-off: Sunday 11 August, 15:30 CEST, DFB Cup, first round.
Venue: Carl-Benz-Stadion, Mannheim.
