Following the come-from-behind victory away to Arsenal on Thursday, Eintracht’s next match is already on the horizon with Monday’s trip to 1. FSV Mainz 05, where the Eagles are looking for a first win at the 12th attempt.

The regional derby between Mainz and Eintracht has formed part of the Bundesliga calendar for the best part of the last 15 years or so, the duo having previously contested full-blooded encounters in the second tier.

The most memorable of those came on the last day of the 2002/03 season, when the Eagles’ scored in the dying seconds against SSV Reutlingen to seal a 6-3 victory that secured promotion to the top flight on goal difference. Without Alexander Schur’s stoppage-time effort, Mainz would have ascended to the Bundesliga, having beaten Eintracht Braunschweig 4-1.

Away day curse

That was a long time ago, of course, although Bundesliga fixtures between the two sides remain hard-fought affairs to this day. The overall record is remarkably even, with six wins for Eintracht, seven for Mainz and nine draws.

However, all of the Eagles’ victories have come on home turf; they have never managed to win in Mainz in 11 attempts. That will hopefully change on Monday, and the last meeting does provide cause for optimism at least, with Adi Hütter’s charges earning a 2-2 draw at the Opel Arena in December 2018.

Tough assignment

Having lost 1-0 to Freiburg and 2-0 to Wolfsburg in their last two Bundesliga outings, Eintracht are determined to return to winning ways on the domestic scene and build on the momentum of their performance against Arsenal. That will be easier said than done though, as Mainz come into the game buoyed by a 5-1 victory away to Hoffenheim in their first match under new coach Achim Beierlorzer last week. Monday’s meeting promises, then, to be another fiercely contested thriller.
