Leipzig preview: League leaders in town
Just ten days lie between Eintracht’s league match against Leipzig and the teams’ DFB Cup last-16 tie. If their recent meetings are anything to go by, the two games are likely to be close.
After last weekend’s valuable 2-1 win at 1899 Hoffenheim, the Eagles host Bundesliga leaders Leipzig in their first home game of 2020 on Saturday 25 January (kick-off 15:30 CET). The majority of games between the two teams have been tight affairs, with Eintracht registering one win (2-1), three draws (0-0, 1-1 and 2-2), and two defeats (both 2-1) in their last six encounters. The sides’ first ever meeting was the only one to end in a one-sided scoreline, as Leipzig capitalised on Eintracht goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky’s early red card to ease to a comfortable 3-0 win.
Having narrowly lost despite an impressive performance at Leipzig in the reverse fixture, the Eagles are looking to extend their unbeaten home record against the east German side to four matches. Eintracht have avoided defeat in all three games at the Commerzbank-Arena to date, drawing two and winning one.
Just ten days later, Adi Hütter’s side host the Bundesliga leaders again in the last 16 of the DFB Cup. Victory on Saturday could provide a timely confidence boost ahead of that cup clash on 4 February.
Kick-off: Saturday 25 January, 15:30 CET, Bundesliga 2019/20, Matchday 19
Stadium: Commerzbank-Arena, Frankfurt
