Niko Kovac believes Eintracht Frankfurt’s stunning victory over Bayern Munich in Saturday’s DFB Cup final was just reward for two years of hard work, while Fredi Bobic feels the Eagles earned their luck against the Bundesliga champions in Berlin.

Board member Fredi Bobic: “Before the game we promised we would put up a fight, and that’s exactly what the boys did. They fought for every inch and earned the luck you need in matches like these. We deserved to win, even more so after what happened last year. We were lacking that little bit of luck a year ago, and maybe one or two players as well. The boys deserve it after all their hard work. We were up for it from the first whistle. It means a great deal for a club like Eintracht Frankfurt to win a cup like this. Frankfurt will be rocking these next few days. To win your first title brings a team closer together and forges strong bonds. I know that from my time as a player.”

Head coach Niko Kovac: “I know what my players are capable of and how much effort they’ve put in. This is a huge triumph. It doesn’t matter that we were third or fourth at one stage this season. Bayern were very strong on the wings. We wanted to stop them from playing through the centre and managed to do that quite well. We wanted to close them down on the flanks with Ante [Rebic] and Marius [Wolf], but we weren’t able to do so for their goal. We changed our system later on, bringing Makoto [Hasebe] further back. We managed to get a foothold again and the boys did very well after that. To win a trophy as underdogs is a huge honour. We’re now in the Europa League and face Bayern in the Supercup at the start of next season.”

Marius Wolf: “It won’t sink in properly for another couple of days. We put in an unbelievable performance. We threw ourselves into every tackle and everyone fought for one another. It worked wonders. The fans were amazing today. The supporters deserve this - they’ve played a huge role in our success. It’s going to be a long night - maybe even a long week.”
