Eagles play to a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders
Eintracht Frankfurt officially began their 2017 U.S. Summer Tour Saturday with a 1-1 draw at the home of Seattle Sounders FC.
More than 40,000 fans flocked to CenturyLink Field to watch the Eagles take on the reigning MLS champions.
Hrgota and Dempsey on target
Despite playing their first friendly of the summer against an opponent in mid-season form, the visitors took the initiative and tested Sounders keeper Stefan Frei early on. Andersson Ordonez had the first real look at goal with a close-range header, followed by a long-range effort from Max Besuschkow. Finally, in the 29th minute, Branimir Hrgota broke the ice by putting away a Timothy Chandler cross that was only partially deflected by Roman Torres. Niko Kovac’s men looked poised to go into halftime with the 1-0 lead, but Clint Dempsey leveled the score just before the break with a clinical finish.
In the second half, goalie Lukas Hradecky was Eintracht’s standout player - keeping Seattle at bay with a number of highlight-reel saves. Meanwhile, there wasn’t much in the way of offensive chances for the Eagles in the final 45 minutes, although Hrgota came close to a brace before being stripped off the ball by a Sounders player just before pulling the trigger. Second-half substitute Danny Blum had perhaps the best look in the 81st minute with a free kick he sent right at keeper Bryan Meredith.
The Eagles will now travel to Chula Vista, California, to continue their U.S. Tour and prepare for Friday’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes.
