The Eagles suffered their first league match defeat this season after losing 2-1 away to 1860 München. The hosts took the lead only 12 seconds into the match with a Rakic goal (1') and added the second following a fast break (Volland 67'). The goal of Theofanis Gekas came too late (90').
Both strikers Mo Idrissou and Rob Friend were not available for the away match, manager Armin Veh brought on Gekas and changed the formation, instead of the usual 4-4-2 Eintracht played a 4-2-3-1 system with the Greek being the lone striker. Hoffer was left on the bench, instead former 1860 player Matthias Lehmann started in midfield.
30,660 witnessed a super fast goal, it took 12 seconds until Rakic was at the end of a sharp cross in the five yard box and hit home with a deflection by Eintracht defender Anderson. Tzavellas (3'), Rode (22') and Schwegler (29') had opportunities to euqualise but either 1860 keeper Kiraly saved or the shots were off target. The hosts on the other hand hardly created any chances, it took them half an hour until Kaiser hit a long range shot over the bar (35'). Three minutes later a Rukavina cross into the box was just missed by Volland who could not get his head at the end of it (38').
Then Oka Nikolov had to be replaced by Thomas Kessler due to a knee injury (40'). Just before half time Eintracht had another scoring opportunity when Gekas and Lehmann played a one-two but Lehmann was unable to control the ball in the end (45').
After the break Kessler proved himself when he saved a Buck shot from close range (48'). But the Eagles now took control and created pressure twoards the 1860 goal. They had 9 shots in the space of 12 minutes: Köhler's shot was blocked (55'), Gekas had a series of chances either saved or sidenetted, Meier's deflected shot went over the bar, Tzavellas also had a go - but neither of them managed to score. Instead the hosts extended theor lead when Kiraly hit a long pass and found Volland who was through on goal and scored with a crisp finish (67').
The Eagles did not give up and kept attacking, still the goal would not come. Schwegler and Tzavellas had various attempts, so did Meier who even hit the cross bar (83'). With a goal Eintracht surely would have had the chance to take away at least one point. But when it came it was too late, Schwegler recovered the ball in midfield and carried it down the right wing, his neat pass found Gekas in the middle who scored his fifth of the season (90').
The early lead of the hosts and Eintracht's lack of converting their multiple chances decided the match in the end. The stats showed 27 to 10 shots, 66% ball possession and 10 to 1 corners in Frankfurt's favour. But the first league match defeat of the season stood.
Coming up next is the home match against Karlsruher SC, now managed by former Eintracht player Jörn ANdersen (Saturday at 13h CET).
