Ahead of the match long-time SGE goalie Oka Nikolov was handed his official fare-well. The fans had arranged for a colourful display to thank the great sportsman who was 22 years at the club and featured in 415 competitive matches as a pro. Armin Veh made one change to Eintrachts starting line-up Rode returned to the defensive midfield, Russ had to stay out with an injury.

Quiet Start

At the beginning the game did not match the great atmosphere the 46,400 created at Oka Nikolov Stadion as the ground was named on this special day. The teams evened each other out, mainly in midfield, the first half hour went without a big scoring opportunity at either end. FCA had conceded only three goals in their last for matches and you could see why. They stood deep and tight, forcing Eintracht to play some incomplete passes on a few occasions. Out of the blue Augsburg scored with the very first chance of the match; Werner was supposedly offside but left the ball to Bobadilla who converted from close range 1-0 to FCA (33).

But the Eagles came straight back, Schrck was neatly set up in the box by Schwegler and Jung and could have had a go but decided to cross in a good chance (34). Moments later Flum played a great through-ball and found Joselu who fired away Augsburg keeper Hitz was at hand and converted the shot towards the post (36). But SGEs efforts paid off after all when Schwegler crossed in from the right, found Joselu who flicked the ball on to Rosenthal and Rosi volleyed in from around eight meters. A great goal 1-1 (42)! That was it for the first half.

Tough Challenge for SGE

The first chance of the second half fell to Augsburg, Werner broke through on the left and sent n a questioning cross, Hahn was too late to profit from it fortunately (53). SGE had lost the spirit of the last first half period and were looking to regain structure. Augsburg still played cleverly and as a unit making it hard for the Eagles to come forward. Still they tried and did not give up but also had to overcome some referee decisions going against their way. Alex Meier had his comeback after around six weeks of injury break, he came on replacing Flum (62).

It was a strange game throughout, with plenty of incomplete passes and very little action in front of the goals. With 20 minutes to go it seemed that Augsburg were quite happy to take away a point as they slowed the match down seemingly. Still they remained a threat on the break especially as SGE tried to push forward. Rode and Schwegler picked up bookings as they were putting effort in to force the Eagles towards the offensive third. But it was Augsburg who had a major scoring opportunity when Milik broke through and was free on goal Trapp once again showed his class parrying twice and Zambrano then cleared for a corner (85). Bakalorz replaced Joselu (88), but there was little to report for the remainder of the match though except another debatable referee decision when a Djakpa cross hit the hand of an Augsburg defender other officials would have given a penalty but not today.

The wait for the first home win this season continues still it was a great 2013. Merry Christmas!
