SGE reached the DFB Cup quarter finals winning 4-2 against Bundesliga 2 outfit SV Sandhausen. Joselu (19'/49' PEN/90'+2) and Kadlec (72') scored for Eintracht, Rode (64' OG) and Tüting (66') for SV.
Spanish striker Joselu: Hat-trick!
Sebastian Rode and Joselu returned to the starting line-up, Martin Lanig and Stephan Schröck had to bite the bullet. SGE coach Armin Veh went for a 4-2-3-1 formation with Barnetta, Inui, Joselu and Kadlec forming the attack.
18,200 saw a lively start to the match despite Sandhausen defending deep in their own half and waiting to come forward on the break. The Eagles quickly built u plenty of ball possession and had various attempts (Rode, Joselu, Kadlec). The 2. Bundesliga side also had a big chance to score the lead when Thiede and Stiefler were through on goal but the latter was not able to control the ball – SGE were lucky in this case.
At the other end Kadlec had another go with a header which was saved by Sandhausen keeper Riemann (17’), minutes later the Czech striker neatly set up Joselu who converted from close range – 1-0 (19’)! Eintracht now seemed fully in control with Sandhausen creating little danger going forward, hey had a few long range shots but to no effect, at the other end it was once again Joselu who missed the target by a few inches (26’). The deserved 1-0 lead stood at the break.
SGE came forward right from the re-start and Inui was awarded a penalty early on when he was brought down at the edge of the box. As Alex Meier was out with an injury Joselu stepped up and coolly converted from the spot – 2-0 (49’)! This seemed like a safety cushion and the Eagles in full control of the happenings. It all changed though within the blink of the eye when Rode received a risky pass in the own box while under pressure, tried to play it back to keeper Trapp but put it into the own goal (64’). And even worse, after a corner Tüting volleyed in from the edge of the box and the match was even again (66’) – unbelievable scenes.
It took a while until SGE recovered from these blows but they came back. Rode set up Kadlec who hit home from around 20 meters in front of goal and the crowd celebrated the lead with great relief (72’). As the Bundesliga 2 outfit came forward pushing for the equalizer Eintracht had more space to create chances on the break. Oczipka (79‘), Flum (80‘) and Inui came (81‘) close, the latter even hit the post, but it was again Joselu who found the target – again set up by Rode (90’+2). The Eagles in the end reached the quarter finals in a rollercoaster cup match against a lively Sandhausen team.
The quarter final draw will be held on Sunday December the 8th, the remaining teams are: 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Hamburger SV, 1899 Hoffenheim, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg and Bayern München.
