Frankfurt reward fans in Bordeaux

Bordeaux - Eintracht Frankfurt sealed their place in the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League, and top spot in Group F with a game to spare, thanks to a 1-0 win at FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

Martin Lanig scored the only goal of the game late on as Frankfurt, backed by an astonishing travelling support of 12,000, rounded off a perfect night of Europa League football for the Bundesliga after SC Freiburg's win.

Fantastic fans

The Frankfurt fans were in good voice, practically transforming the game into a home tie for the Eagles, who appeared, however, reluctant to take flight. The early chances were Bordeaux's with Tidiane Diabate heading wide and Kevin Trapp making a fine save to deny Abdou Traore.

Frankfurt's chances were wasted by Sebastian Rode, whose header missed the target, and Vaclav Kadlec, who was denied by a raised offside flag. The Frankfurt fans made their voices heard throughout as Kadlec, scorer of the team's first goal in the group stage of this campaign, posed the greatest threat.

Last-gasp Lanig

It was going to take something spectacular to spark the game into life and Saivet provided it early in the second half with an extraordinary overhead kick from over 20 yards out which Trapp only just managed to push behind at full stretch. The shot at least gave Saivet confidence as he led Bordeaux forward over and over again.

Diabate then sprang the Frankfurt offside trap only to lose his composure with only Trapp to beat, the Frankfurt goalkeeper turning his shot behind for a corner. Bordeaux, increasingly aware that a draw was not enough for them, continued to attack. The goalless stalemate would have done it for Frankfurt, but they wanted to go through in style, with top spot, and when Lanig ghosted in at the far post to meet Tranquillo Barnetta's cross, they achieved just that, much to the visiting fans' delight.

Line-ups:

Bordeaux: Carrasso - Faubert, Henrique, Planus (46' Sertic), Poundje - Saivet, Sane, Maurice-Belay (65' Jussie) - Rolan, Diabate, Traore (75' Obraniak)
Frankfurt: Trapp - Jung, Zambrano, Oczipka, Kempf - Barnetta, Schwegler, Rode, Flum - Kadlec (79' Lanig), Joselu (46' Schrck)

Goal: 0-1 (Lanig 83')
