Maccabi Tel Aviv clip Eagles' wings

Tel Aviv - Eintracht Frankfurt passed up the opportunity to book their place in the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League after suffering a 4-2 defeat at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The game appeared done and dusted after Eran Zahavi and Barak Itzhaki (two) fired the Israelis into a 3-0 half-time lead, but Eintracht hit back through Srdjan Lakic and Alex Meier, before Zahavi wrapped up a barnstorming encounter in injury time.

Double trouble

Responding to the partisan crowd's cajoles, Tel Aviv were moving the ball with confidence in the early exchanges and took a deserved lead after 14 minutes when Zahavi got the better of Anderson Bamba, before lashing into the net for 1-0. Itzhaki was the next to try his luck, but the midfielder was unable to find the target from range.

Eintracht went in search of an immediate equaliser, with Johannes Flum firing straight at home goalkeeper Juan Pablo, only for Itzhaki to double his side's advantage moments later. Eintracht were stunned, but it got worse still before the half was up as Zahavi teed up livewire midfielder Itzhaki to thump home his second of the night.

Goals galore

To their credit, the Eagles kept plugging away, reducing the arrears to 3-2 in the space of four second-half minutes thanks to Lakic's close-range header and Meier's emphatic penalty. Joselu's introduction added fresh impetus to the Eintracht cause, with the Spaniard's dangerous low cross sailing across goal and out of play.

Fellow substitute Vaclav Kadlec went closer still as Eintracht turned the screw, stooping to head Stephan Schrck's clever cross narrowly wide, before Tel Aviv sealed the victory with a penalty of their own in added time, coolly dispatched by Zahavi.
