German DFB Cup

Round 1: FV Illertissen 0-2 Eintracht Frankfurt

In a rather uneventful cup match the Eagles won 2-0 against FV Illertissen with two second half goals. Joselu scored the opener (64') and Rode fired in a long range effort in stoppage time (90'+2).

6,000 saw a typical cup match in the first half with the underdog defending deeply and the favourite struggling to manage a break-through.

New Faces

Eintracht manager Armin Veh had brought on various new signings: Joselu started up front alongside Jan Rosenthal, Johannes Flum joined Schwegler, Meier and Rode in midfield. Aykut zer was in goal due to both Trapp and Wiedwald being out with match bans from the last cup season. The Eagles dominated the first half (75.7% ball possession) and relied on slick and fluent passing.

Still they managed only five goal attempts as the hosts defended with passion and made life very difficult for SGE. The 4th division side hardly came forward but showed an organized performance defensively. Joselu came closest to scoring for Eintracht with a good header from a corner (28') which was just off target though. The score line was 0-0 at half time.

Second Half Relief

The second half developed in a similar way as the first 45 minutes with Illertissen hanging back deep in their own half and the Eagles dominating with a high percentage of possession. Oczipka on the left and Jung on the right then started to hit more crosses from the wings. And it was Jung who set up Joselu in the five yard box after 64 minutes, the Spanish striker converted from close range - finally SGE had managed the opening goal!

Sebastian Rode added the second in stoppage time (90'+2) with a cracking shot from the edge of the box into the top left corner of the goal, again Jung recorded the assist. It wasn't an easy match for SGE and after all they did well to proceed to the second round of the German DFB Cup. There is still some work to do for the team and manager to be prepared for the start of the Bundesliga season. Next Saturday SGE will play Hertha BSC Berlin away (kick-off at 15.30h CET).
