2-0 Home Defeat v Wolfsburg
The Eagles suffered a 2-0 home defeat against VfL Wolfsburg (Didavi 48', Gomez 63'), a missed chance to keep in touch with the upper third of the Bundesliga standings.
Eintracht coach Niko Kovac made four changes in his starting line-up: Gacinovic, Tawatha, Rebic and Hrgota replaced Russ, Abraham (match ban), Seferovic and Barkok. Timmy Chandler captained the team in absence of Abraham, Wolfsburg featured Sebastain Jung in their starting 11 who played 16 years for Eintracht from his youth days on.
In a once again newly assembled starting 11 the Eagles went into the match which had a quiet start. SGE recorded close to 60% ball possession and won 80% of their one-on-one duels, focussing on a solid defense first of all. It took around 16 minutes until the first good chance took place, Rebic did well on the left and crossed in for Hrgota who missed the ball by inches.
Wolfsburg first good opportunity came after around half an hour when a cross from the right flew in, Gomez in the 6 yard box missed it and Ntep followed up from close range but missed the target (28'). Still the Wolves seemed no major threat up front while the Eagles had to overcome the new tactical set-up and the changes in various positions. The result was a lacklustre first half which ended with a 0-0 score line.
The second half started with a blow for the Eagles, Wolfsburg scored after Bazoer and Gomez set up Didavi who converted from close range (48'). The goal was unexpected as it was unnecessary; Kovac reacted right away and replaced Stendera, Tarashaj came on (51'). Fabian had a go from long range but his attempt was off target (61'), shortly after Wolves goalkeeper Casteels did well with a save against Hrgota's header from close range - a good opportunity for SGE.
At the other end Ntep came charging through with a powerful run and passed in for Gomez who was free on goal and tapped in, 2-0 Wolfsburg (63') who were mighty efficient in their chance conversion. Kovac made a double substitution and brought on Seferovic and Blum for Rebic and Hrgota (67'). Fabian had a major chance after a cross from the left, unfortunately he put the ball over the bar from around the penalty spot distance (70').
Another chance fell to Seferovic inside the box but his attempt was also off target (73'), at the other end Eintracht keeper Hradecky did well with a save against an attempt of Ntep (77'). The Eagles were lacking that final touch and the creativity to create more attempts while Wolfsburg of course stood deep and were happy to keep the two goal lead. 49,000 at the ground were surely not happy with the match and the score but kept cheering on the team.
Malli came close for Wolfsburg with an attempt from the edge of the box which went just off target (87'). Five minutes were added to the 90 but to no effect for the Eagles. The 2-0 defeat stood after all, a missed chance to keep in touch with the upper third of the Bundesliga standings. Coming up is the away match against Mainz 05 Saturday next week.
